Originally, sunglasses were developed in the early 15th century. The Chinese performed smoke tinting on non-prescription glasses before 1430. But dark-lensed glasses were not used to protect from the sun; Chinese judges often wore sunglasses with quartz to hide the expression in their eyes while during a court case. Seems they were onto something! These days, celebrities hide behind their tinted sunglasses, and designers have made a fortune on people's desire for (ocular) privacy!
