July 31, 2009, Newsletter Issue #200: Protecting Your Designer Sunglasses

Tip of the Week

Popular styles of designer sunglasses often have reflective lenses. Unfortunately, the coating on reflective lenses is easily scratched. While glass itself is naturally scratch resistant, the coatings applied to glass are not. In response to the need to protect designer lenses, manufacturers have developed a variety of ways to apply films to the lenses. These films are made of materials such as diamond-like carbon (DLC) and polycrystalline diamond. Through a process of ionization, a thin and durable film is created on the surface of the lens. It's clear and reslilant, and may help in lengthening the life of your designer lenses.
